Windows cannnot find the host name using DNS please help?
I have a laptop and my internet connection is great, but when I try to upload it says the page can not be displayed and it says something about my dns. Please help.
First make sure that the DNS is really the problem. You must be registered and has administrator privileges for this. Go to Start> Run (search box in Vista)> and type "cmd" and press enter (* Note if you are running Windows Vista, you have to press "Ctrl + Shift + Enter" instead of the Enter key to enable "Run as Administrator ") When you open the command line, do the following:" type ping 'google.com and beaten to enter If you are having problems DNS will not get a "response" just hang in there and do nothing, so press "Ctrl + C on your keyboard to stop the ping. Now type 'ping 4.2.2.4 "and hit enter If you receive a" response ", now I know you know your Internet connection is working, but the resolution DNS is not. Type "ipconfig / all" in command prompt search for: "DNS Servers …….." and enter the IP address that tells the right. (For example, 10.2.3.4) Try to ping the IP address. If you do not get an answer then you need to contact your ISP, the problem is in end. If you receive a reply, try the following at the command line to fix this problem. Type "ipconfig / flushdns" and hit enter - Now try ping to google again if you still can not get an answer, "type net stop 'dnscache and press Enter then type" net start dnscache "and hit Enter to try to ping google again as before. If still no luck, try this 6) Re (Start> Run (Search on Vista)> type 'devmgmt.msc' and press enter. This will open the device manager. Expand your network adapter and right click select "Uninstall", if asked NOT remove the drivers. Restart the computer and carry out steps 1 and 2 again to test. If you're still lucky, while the new command prompt "netsh int 'ip reset Press enter Type and then restart your computer. Once the PC has started again, repeat the steps at the beginning and again gooogle.com ping test. If this fails, the firewall can be blocking DNS requests, and you may need to make sure that your firewall is is allowing outgoing UDP connections on port 53 (the steps to achieve this varies depending on the firewall you are running) If after all this, the PC is still unable to resolve DNS names, you may want to reinstall Windows, or visit a PC technician or your ISP for further instructions.

DNS and BIND (5th Edition)

The Domain Naming System (DNS) is a glorious thing. It takes familiar Internet network and machine names (like “amazon.com”) and converts them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (like “208.35.218.15″) that are meaningful to routers and therefore useful for identifying the machine you want to reach. What’s amazing is that DNS enables someone in Germany to refer, by name, to a computer in Mongolia …
